The Official Field Day Lineup: 4 Characters who ALWAYS Show Up

As Field Day approaches, students buzz with excitement, nervousness, and perhaps a hint of anxiety. It’s the one day Seoul Foreign High School comes together to showcase their skills and talents.  While the games and events are fun, the best part of Field Day isn’t inside playing the games. It’s inside, observing the people.

Regardless of grade or year, the same types of students show up to every Field Day; it’s as if every grade cast members beforehand. Look around, and you’ll see one of these 4 characters right away. Maybe you’ll realize you’re one of them.

1. The Overcompetitive Athlete

Dressed up with full sports gear, stretching like an Olympian before the start of a game—for this person, Field Day is not just for fun. It’s war. While the game officials explain the rules, they are already strategizing and positioning their teammates like a coach. Whether it’s basketball, volleyball, or tug of war, the overcompetitive athletes will do whatever it takes to win the game. I admit that I was that person during the basketball prelims. However, while their overintensity may sometimes feel scary, without it, the games would feel flat. They turn simple games like dodgeball and capture the flag into a thrilling battle full of energy.

2. The Observer

On the other hand, some aren’t always into winning. The Observer is perfectly fine with sitting on the sidelines under the shade, sipping water, and laughing at everyone else’s struggles. They somehow always manage to avoid participating in the hardest games. The observers are the people who balance the mood, keeping the day relaxed amid all the energy. They cheer(a little), vibe with friends, and maybe even spark a small talk with the teachers.

3. The Content Creator

While everyone else is sweating under the sweltering hot day, the Content Creator is focused on taking photos, videos, and documenting the chaos. Their phone is constantly out the entire day, snapping selfies, recording tug-of-war in slow motion, and adding captions for the gram. If anything funny happens, like a fall, a missed catch, or a teacher accidentally getting hit by a dodgeball, you can bet that it’d be on their Instagram story within seconds. Nevertheless, the Content Creator’s stories remind us of those small, entertaining moments of Field Day that we might one day forget.

4. The Team Spirit Machine

You hear this person even before seeing them. They always cheer you on from the sidelines, chanting until their voices go out. Even if their team loses in every single event, it doesn’t matter because they’re screaming “We’re number one!” at the top of their lungs. They’re the heart and soul of Field Day. They cheer for everyone, playing the role of the motivator of the grade.

Which one are you?

The truth is, most people aren’t just one of these types. As a freshman last year, I was just the observer who stuck around the sidelines. This year, I plan to be the overcompetitive athlete as I enter field day. Each of these characters is what makes Field Day such a vital part of school life because they bring balance, motivation, and excitement to every game and moment of the day.

So, as Field Day begins, ask yourself: which one are you?
