The Met-a Controversy
Every year, as soon as it turns May, the Met Gala is a magnet for paparazzis, bringing together the biggest names in entertainment, fashion, and culture for an unforgettable night of both the extravagant gowns and suits but also the public’s favorite- the controversial looks. Celebrities whip together their top-tier outfits, attempting to tailor to the set theme of the event set by the Costume Institute of the Metropolitan Museum of Art. The mastermind behind the gala is none other than Vogue’s infamous global editors Anna Wintor and Bolton, who have the final say in the guest list we all hope gets leaked. However, behind all the glamor lies a path of controversy, particularly the event's choice of themes and its supposed portrayal as a ‘charity event’.
The Met Gala is renowned for its abstract and elaborate themes that challenge guests to think out of the box and create a lasting impression, but at what cost? From iconic themes like “Punk: Chaos to Couture” to “Superheroes: Fashion and Fantasy”, Met’s themes set a space for designers and artists to display stunning visuals of artistry. But just because a celebrity embodies the theme to perfection does not mean it's culturally appropriate nor sensible.
2015’s theme “China: Through the Looking Glass” was a public’s favorite in terms of sending harsh criticism. Upon facing backlash for sustaining stereotypes and “exoticising Chinese culture”, many argued that the theme lessened a rich and diverse culture to the sole purpose of aesthetics, undermining its historical value and significance. Additionally, the 2023 theme, “Karl Lagerfeld: A Line of Beauty” honoring the German fashion designer well known for his work with Chanel, was no different. The criticism focused on Lagerfeld himself who was known for his controversial statements such as his commentary on the #metoo movement where he told Numéro Magazine in 2018 that he was “fed up” with the movement. His blatant commentary on women, especially his models, is unacceptable and has been publicized through statements like, “I read somewhere that now you must ask a model if she is comfortable with posing. It’s simply too much; from now on, as a designer, you can’t do anything.” Thus many individuals have criticized The Met for its insensitive decisions.
Moreover, although the Met Gala is portrayed as a charitable event, with proceeds going to the Costume Institute’s exhibitions and projects, the extent of its impact has been scrutinized. With tickets costing jaw dropping figures and only increasing in price each year, only a small portion benefit the Museum’s research and programs. Its price tag is merely set as a barrier to promote exclusivity and elitism. The event’s ability to draw millions of eyes all over the world creates a platform for attendees to use their influence to raise awareness for different causes; so why haven’t we heard anything about current crises? While dresses made of thousands of hand sewn crystals or custom knit micro fabrics were worn on the carpet and celebrities were being carried up stairs by multiple bodyguards, not a single mention of Gaza was noticed. The chants of protestors and activists were erased.
Nevertheless, the Met Gala remains as one of the most influential nights in fashion history. Whether it’s heated debates discussing a celebrity’s choice of color and lack of accessorizing or issues of representation, the Met Gala serves as a bridge, linking tensions beyond the fashion industry. All we can say is it’s always a little messy.
