Potential Ban on Tiktok

Tiktok, the social media network that has swept the lives of over a billion users, has sparked serious complications with American lawmakers.

The U.S government plans to ban Tiktok, unless ByteDance, a Chinese internet company agrees to sell the platform to a non-Chinese firm. Although it was originally rumored, President Joe Biden has officially signed the bill into act. (BBC).

Why was this bill put into place?

There was growing concern that Tiktok was possibly releasing data in accordance with the Chinese government, although this claim wasn’t verified. According to Karine Jean-Pierre, the White House press secretary, said that this was “not a ban. It is a divestment.” (BBC).

So what happens now?

Don’t stress, the ban hasn’t happened yet. If the ban does come into place, the app will simply disappear from app stores. In the end, it all comes down to ByteDance, and how they handle the new bill.
