Meet Meat-free Mrs. Feitosa

For many dedicated meat lovers, the thought of sacrificing succulent steaks or sizzling bacon might feel like a culinary sacrilege. However, in our increasingly health-conscious world, vegetarianism has risen as a prominent trend. This should come as no surprise considering the numerous benefits that plant-based diets offer, including enhanced heart health, effective weight management, and improved cognitive functions. Vegetarian diets not only aid the human body but also promote a healthier planet. This dietary choice—dating back to the sixth century B.C.- has solidified itself with a large community of plant-based eaters who believe their choices make a difference in our world. Among many devotees is Ms. Feitosa, our SFS English teacher and assistant coach. Join us as we delve into her personal journey as a vegetarian.

Mrs. Feitosa has been a lifelong vegetarian, maintaining a plant-based diet that includes greens, eggs, dairy, and more: her mother instilled her love for veggies from a young age. While she did dip her toes into various meat options, the flavors never won her over. Mrs. Feitosa adds that she "stuck with vegetarianism because it seems like a kinder, more sustainable way to live." When asked if she believes in promoting vegetarian diets, especially among adolescents, Mrs. Feitosa responded, "Yes, it can be beneficial, even." Raising her children as vegetarians, she's directly witnessed the positive impact of this diet through their active and healthy lifestyles.

With that said, maintaining a vegetarian diet comes with its own share of challenges, especially when traveling to places with limited vegetarian options. Mrs. Feitosa shared her experiences of occasional awkwardness and the challenge of not wanting to appear rude when others prepare meat-based meals for her. Fortunately for vegetarians like her, the culinary landscape is evolving to cater modern-day preferences! With the demand for vegetarian and vegan foods growing, many restaurants and cafeterias, including Crave at SFS, offer plant-based meals.

Another drawback to vegetarianism is the common critique revolving around concerns about nutritional deficiencies, especially protein. Many scientific outlets have suggested that a lack of nutrients during your adolescence can have detrimental effects on your chronic health. Mrs. Feitosa counters this by finding ways to incorporate protein-rich foods into her meals. Her go-to sources include nuts, legumes, whole grains, and tofu.

Vegetarianism often intertwines with the protection of animal rights by advocating against animal cruelty in farming and slaughterhouses. Mrs. Feitosa encourages people who care for these issues to start reflecting upon how their choices can make a difference—each individual can contribute to a collective effort. "But don't get me wrong," Mrs. Feitosa quickly added. "I'm not perfect. I still feel guilty about how much I love my leather cowboy boots." Mrs. Feitosa's vegetarian journey offers a glimpse into the diverse world of dietary choices. Her personal experiences and insights shed light on the potential benefits and challenges of adopting a vegetarian lifestyle.
