Bursts of laughter and chants of encouragement echoed in the hallways of the LYSO Center. In the morning of September 27th, the entire high school gathered together to start off Field Day. Excitement and high spirits filled the air as students, wearing Disney princess-themed shirts, waited for the opening assembly to start. The first round of Jeopardy began with seniors, or Team Elsa, who took the first win, and similarly they demolished the other princesses in most of the other games. However, everybody still had fun contributing their abilities to support their grade level. The freshmen, or Team Sofia the First, lost almost all the games but were happy to experience their first Field Day. Field Day wasn’t just for the athletes but it was for everyone with different interests to gather and show off their grade spirit while acknowledging the behind the scenes of this event. To make this vivacious event possible, behind the scenes, an equally important effort unfolds as teachers and student council members work tirelessly to make it happen. Their enthusiasm was just as important as the competition itself.
Justin Kim (9), one of the grade 9 representatives, contributed to planning this year's Field Day. He explains the arduous yet memorable experience, that “the hardest part was organizing the t-shirts as some people didn't fill out the form [by the due date].” In the end, he was glad he got to enjoy the Field Day events, music, food, and fun games. His favorite event was the tug of war, as he felt the community came together to cheer for each other. Even in the future Field Days, he’s looking forward to the tug of wars and seeing all the grade levels being engaged. But what he is even more excited about is how he will be older. “From a seniors perspective we’re like babies, maybe if we go into our second year of high school, we’ll feel like them.” Overall, Justin had a great time in his first Field Day as it was more competitive compared to the Middle School Field Days.
Jamie Oh (10) was able to experience more of the Field Day activities compared to last year, where she was more of a spectator organizing a lot of rosters and hanging them around the high school building. She explained that she was not able to experience all the activities last year as she was busy making the event a happy experience for all. Unlike last year, this year she was able to participate in different games and activities. However, as someone who is not a “sportsperson”, her favorite part was watching all the videos instead of running the school playing Monsters, “because not only were they really entertaining, but everyone’s reaction was so intriguing.” Overall, these different experiences Jamie had were all really memorable for her.
Field Day 2024 was an unforgettable experience for everyone involved, from the seniors celebrating their last high school Field Day to the freshmen experiencing their first high school event. No matter what the students were good at, this event was unforgettable for all. Countless hours of planning, coordination, and teamwork had gone into making the event so special for everyone. While each person created memories that each meant something different, this all happened through the hard behind the scenes of Field Day 2024.
